Give charities a fair share of lottery funding

Responding to
warnings by the Scottish Council of Voluntary Organisations that charities and
voluntary groups in Scotland are facing a “devastating”
70% reduction in lottery funding as money is diverted to meet the sprialling
cost of the 2012 London Olympics, SNP Culture, Media and Sport Spokesman Pete
Wishart MP said:

“A 70%
diversion of funds from Scottish organisations to build the London Olympic
village amounts to more than £150m – a massive cut for good causes across
Scotland.

“Just last
week, Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell said that the UK Government would “almost
certainly not” have bid for the Olympics if they had realised an economic
recession was looming but this is cold comfort for the good causes across
Scotland facing huge financial uncertainty as a result of these cuts.

“This
situation is entirely unsustainable. Throughout Scotland, we
will soon hear stories of lottery supported good causes having difficulties and
perhaps being forced to close down as a result of reduced funding.

“These cuts
are completely unacceptable.”
