SNP condemn early firework sales

SNP politicians in Dundee have condemned the early sale of fireworks at half price at a shop in Lochee. R S McColl’s have erected a large advertising poster in their shop window in Lochee High Street. The sign breaches all the voluntary codes currently in place.
Shona Robison MSP, who is currently pursuing a Private Members Bill to introduce a licensing scheme for Fireworks commented,

“This illustrates why it is so important to tighten up the legislation surrounding the sale of fireworks. Although in breach of the voluntary code what RS McColl are doing here is technically legal. I have written a strongly worded letter to their headquarters demanding that they adhere to the voluntary code which restricts the sale of fireworks to the three weeks immediately prior to 5th November.”

Irene McGugan MSP added

“It is over 6 weeks before bonfire night and already we are receiving complaints from Dundee residents about abuse of fireworks. I would have hoped that a National Chain like RS McColl’s would have been more responsible.”

Cllr Joe FitzPatrick who has led the fight on the council to restrict the sale of fireworks said,

“The SNP in Dundee are not prepared to tolerate another year of fireworks mayhem. We are highlighting this store now because a member of the public has brought it to our attention. We will continue to name and shame irresponsible stores throughout the coming months.”
