Single Officer Patrols no Substitute for More Police says Cunningham

Speaking in advance of her keynote speech tomorrow (Tuesday) to an audience of justice professionals SNP Shadow Justice Minister Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP said that single officer patrols currently in operation in Tayside and Lothian & Borders police forces are no substitute for more police officers on Scotland's streets.

Police officers have also expressed concerns about the implications of these patrols for their own physical safety as well as the need for corroboration in securing a conviction. Ms Cunningham added that as Justice Minister she would increase the number of police officers on Scotland's streets by one thousand. Ms Cunningham commented:

"We need more police and a more visible police presence on our streets but that presence must be a real one and not a presentational invention.

"Single officer patrols which have been introduced in a number of police forces are therefore no substitute for more police officers on the streets.

"Police officers have also expressed their concern about the implications of these patrols for their own physical safety as well as the need for corroboration in securing a conviction.

"The SNP believes that we must make a real difference to the fight against crime and therefore as Justice Minister in an SNP Executive I pledge to increase by one thousand the number of police officers on Scotland's streets."
