Executive Must Get A Grip On Scotrail

Commenting on reports in the press today (Friday) which suggest that rail passengers in Scotland face a 23 percent hike in fares the SNP Shadow Transport Minister Mr Kenny MacAskill MSP said:

"At a time when we are trying to encourage people out of their cars and into public transport we have the situation where rail passengers in Scotland are facing a massive hike in fares. This is completely absurd; the Executive won't solve the problem simply by handing the Scotrail franchise to another bidder.

"What we need is to get control of railways in Scotland as if we don't control the track then we can't control the direction. The franchise is important but political control and accountability of the rails is fundamental. It is therefore time for the Scottish Executive to get a grip before Scotland grinds to halt."
