Five times Westminster ignored Scotland’s democratic decisions

From the renewal of Trident to the prospect to being taken out the EU against our will – Scotland’s democratic deficit has never been clearer.

Here are just five times that Scotland’s democratic decisions have been ignored by Westminster.

1. Scotland voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU but we are now on the verge of being dragged out against our will.

A majority in every single local authority area and 62 per cent of people across Scotland voted in favour of remaining in the EU.The SNP Scottish government is working tirelessly to deliver what Scotland voted for.

2. Scotland opposes Trident renewal but Westminster has written a blank cheque to base another generation of nuclear weapons on the Clyde.

On 19 July 2016, 58 of Scotland’s 59 MPs voted against the decision to renew the Trident nuclear weapons system. There is also opposition to the renewal of Trident from the people of Scotland, the STUC, civic Scotland, Scotland’s churches and the Scottish Parliament.

3. A majority of Scotland’s MPs oppose Tory austerity.

SNP MPs have called for an end to austerity and modest increases in public spending. When Westminster last approved George Osborne’s austerity charter, 56 of Scotland’s 59 MPs opposed it.

4. Scotland overwhelmingly rejected the Tories but we got a majority Tory government anyway.

In the 2015 General Election the Tories achieved their lowest share of the vote in Scotland for 150 years and hold just one seat of 59.

5. Despite all SNP MPs voting against air strikes on Syria, Westminster backed the UK government’s call for military action.

On 2 December 2015, 57 of Scotland’s 59 MPs voted against air strikes on Syria but they went ahead anyway.
