“‘The world is waiting for us. I know Scotland is ready.’ Hollywood star Alan Cumming was not just addressing the hundreds of guests at the Edinburgh launch of Yes Scotland - he was making that declaration to people across Scotland, and far beyond these shores, at the launch of the Yes campaign in Edinburgh, on Friday 25 May.
“The Scottish actor was one of numerous speakers voicing their own reasons for supporting an independent Scotland.
“I am proud to be Scottish, and I am proud to be a Scottish nationalist – an international nationalist. I have no doubts Scotland can have a positive impact on the world stage.
“Other speakers who feel the same way as Alan Cumming and I included Brian Cox, former Labour MP Dennis Canavan, Green co-convener Patrick Harvie, Scotland’s Makar Liz Lochhead, Former Ravenscraig union leader Tommy Brennan, actress Elaine C Smith and the Proclaimers.
“These voices are adding to community-led movement for independence – a movement that is getting stronger every day.
“The SNP is a part of Yes Scotland’s grassroots campaign, uniting with people from all political parties and none in this common cause. They have all signed up to the Yes Declaration, which sets out the central case for an independent Scotland, and points to the sort of country Scotland can become as an independent nation:
"I believe that it is fundamentally better for us all, if decisions about Scotland's future are taken by the people who care most about Scotland, that is, by the people of Scotland.
“Being independent means Scotland's future will be in Scotland's hands.
“There is no doubt that Scotland has great potential. We are blessed with talent, resources and creativity. We have the opportunity to make our nation a better place to live, for this and future generations. We can build a greener, fairer and more prosperous society that is stronger and more successful than it is today.
“I want a Scotland that speaks with her own voice and makes her own unique contribution to the world: a Scotland that stands alongside the other nations on these isles, as an independent nation."
“Less than a week after the launch, 15,000 people have already signed up to the Declaration, and over 4,000 people have signed up to volunteer for the Yes campaign.
“The aim is to gather one million signatures, as we head towards the referendum in 2014.
“The countdown to the historic vote on our nation’s future has started and I know more people will sign up to say Yes to a greener, fairer and more prosperous Scotland.”
